Millions gathered around the world to welcome in the new year. Their eyes, transfixed on the heavens, marveled at the dazzling fireworks in every imaginable shape and color. The audible “oos” and “ahs” communicated the wonder and beauty experienced. But shortly after midnight, the sky again turned dark, and the fireworks ceased. After people hugged, kissed, and offered well wishes for a new year, they packed up and returned home, hoping for a better new year.
The sentiments were sweet, the well wishes kind, and the expressions of love appreciated, but what impact did the fire-lit sky provide to change the new year?
Sadly, our fixation on the colorful fireworks hid the true glory and beauty the night sky offered.
The Heavens and Earth Declare
In Psalm 19:1, David states, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaim his handiwork.” You see, beyond the bright lights and booming explosions, the voice of God softly speaks to us of a God whose glory and love for His creation far exceeds the marvel of a fireworks display.
God is not silent in our world. Though it may be difficult to hear His voice, it is not because He isn’t speaking. More often, it is because we fail to look and listen beyond the distractions of flashing lights and loud voices.
Francis Bacon, a fifteenth-century scientist who is credited with developing the scientific method, said, “There are two books laid before us to study, to prevent our falling into error: first the volume of the Scriptures, which reveal the will of God; then the volume of the creation, which expresses his power” (The Advancement of Learning, 72).1
God’s Revelation
What is so beautiful about God’s revelation of Himself in our world is that the sky is everywhere. From the arid Sahara desert to the frozen north and south poles, to the jungles of the Amazon, to the crystal waters of glacial lakes, everyone can look up and see the same sky and the God who created it. As a result, we are all without excuse (Rom. 1:20). God is speaking. But are we listening?
Our Challenge
As we begin this new year, may we push past the distractions to see, hear, and experience the Creator whose glory surrounds us. May we spend daily time in His Word, discovering His truth for our lives and world. And may we be captivated by and assured of God’s incredible love for us.
